Then first things first, you’ll want to think of a name for your charcter. You can have a first name and last name, a single name, or no a name your character has no memory of. Then you’ll want think about your character’s life before they died.
Bear in mind, we’re talking about your character’s life as they knew it right up until this moment. The circumstances of your passing aren’t just footnotes; they’re pivotal. There are no children, nor can you get pregnant in Rumor and everyone who has died to end up here is died at 18+.
Once you have named your character the next thing you’ll want to decide is what Era of real world time they died in. We invite characters from all corners of history, provided they don’t align with ethical or racial controversies (for instance, no Nazis or slavers).
You might be pondering, how is it possible to play a character from any era? Wouldn’t that mean some characters have been in Rumor for centuries, or even millennia? That’s an insightful question and the short answer is no. In truth, Rumor exists beyond the confines of a traditional timeline. This city merges the conveniences of modern life, the allure of ancient worlds, and the dazzle of futuristic possibilities into a singular, timeless Hell.
If you want a complex answer we have one of those, but the simple answer is the Narritive Nexus chooses when you arrive in Rumor. The Narritive Nexus is, of course, you. You pick what day you put in you join us and begin to explore the world of Rumor! Playing characters that have history in Rumor predating the point of when you begin playing is currently not allowed. Learning the city is part of the experience. You’re welcome to display any knowledge learned on this site in character and claim an NPC informed you of it.
What memories from their previous life does your character retain, if any? Are they entering Rumor with a full recollection of their past, perhaps arriving embittered and jaded by their experiences? The impact of their memories on their personality and outlook is crucial. If your character retains any recollections of their life before death, identify the most pivotal memories that shaped their identity and their outward apperance, or their Genre. If they have no memories it will be up to you, their writer, to choose where they fit best based on their life.
Given your character’s back story how would they react to the modern day world of Rumor with all it’s strange, surreal flora. Will they step off the train and have a deceptive sense of familiarity before the jarring realization hits that their last memory has nothing to do with a train? Or will the shock of their tragic death, or even murder, send them into a frenzied search for assistance amidst the unknown?
Consider if they’re from before modern day comforts and will get lost marveling at the sheer existence of electricity and smartphones as if they’ve stepped into a dream, or if they’re driven so insane by dying they think they’re from a future so advanced that Rumor’s technology appears primitive in comparison. Think about their reaction upon witnessing magic for the first time after it having been not real for most of modern time, or that it has been called evil through most of history. How will your Echo react learning of Rumor’s unique rule surrounding death — here, you don’t die; you respawn. Each new discovery promises to be an astonishment, an opportunity to bond with other players over shared wonders or terrors as you ask if they have shared the same experiences and you discover the world togther. Imagine the intensity of undergoing their first respawn unprepared, the terror akin to knowingly jumping to your death. Such an ordeal could leave your Echo waking in the hospital, haunted by nightmares, clinging to their very sanity.
This journey through Rumor isn’t just about showing up at the unknown’s door step; it’s a deep dive into a psyche of a mind and how many times it can handle breaking away from reality before it snaps.
The Narritive Nexus changes you when you get off the Train and enter Rumor City. How it changes your character from the human, locked in the mundane of the real world, to their new self is up to you. Your character after it entered Rumor is no longer considered a human but a Echo of all the information that you, the Narritive Nexus, have gathered on them. These Echoes, as they and all others in Rumor refer to themselves, embody the essence of these narratives. Where do you feel your Echo lined up these genres? Remember, as Echoes go through changes in story their Genre switches often as it is based on apperance, and in Rumor your apperance is in constant flux. So constant your character can look different week to week and be a differene genre each week as well!
